How much does a carbon credit cost? Understanding the price

The price per tonne is only part of the offer: learn what to ask for when comparing credits and costs on a consistent basis.

In short

There is no single price for a voluntary carbon credit. The cost depends on the project, the characteristics of the units, the quantity and the services included in the offer. Request a dated quote that separates the credit price from other costs and identifies the project, period, status and delivery terms. Carbonetica Registry does not calculate quotes or automatically complete purchases.

What does a carbon credit price refer to?

Start by identifying what is being offered. A price in euros per tonne should refer to identifiable units, rather than a generic description such as “green project”. Ask which project generates the credits, which period of climate outcomes they represent, and whether the units have already been issued or will be delivered in the future.

This distinction matters: for an issued unit, you can request serial numbers and its current status; for future delivery, read the timing, conditions and responsibilities if issuance does not occur. Gold Standard also distinguishes issued-credit sales from future purchase agreements. These offers should not be treated as equivalent.

To understand the unit before assessing an offer, read what carbon credits are and how they work.

What affects carbon credit costs?

Voluntary market projects can have different implementation costs, methodologies and additional benefits. Location, the period of outcomes, purchase quantity and associated services also matter. Gold Standard’s explanation of price factors helps interpret these differences; its historical examples are not a current price list.

Make the comparison useful by preparing a record for each offer. Note the project activity, stated scheme, methodology, period, independent verification documents and unit status. Add the quantity, quote expiry date and services actually included. Different prices may refer to different units and conditions.

A high price alone does not establish quality. A low price does not explain which checks have been performed. As Gold Standard’s discussion of carbon credit price and value illustrates, the value attributed to a project and the price paid are different measures. A decision needs evidence alongside the financial information.

Six questions to ask when comparing quotes

  1. Who is the counterparty? Identify the seller and ask on what basis they can supply the proposed units.
  2. Which credits are included? Record the project, period, quantity and serial numbers, or how the units will be identified before delivery.
  3. What evidence can you review? Request project and verification documents with references consistent with the quantities offered.
  4. What is the unit price? Ask for the currency, validity period and conditions for your requested quantity.
  5. Which costs are separate? Ask whether transfer, any retirement, support and other services are included; clarify the applicable tax treatment too.
  6. What will you receive, and when? Distinguish the transfer of units, any retirement and final records. Ask who performs each step.

Mark missing information as something to obtain. Do not compare an inclusive price with a quote that excludes services you need.

How to build a clear budget

A useful structure is: number of credits × agreed unit price + confirmed separate costs. This is a way to read an offer, not a Carbonetica quote. If comparing currencies, also document the date and basis of conversion.

Keep the budget for measuring and reducing emissions separate from spending on credits. Before deciding the quantity, define the purpose, period and boundary of the initiative. For a sector-specific approach, see our guide to carbon credits for logistics companies.

How to request information from Carbonetica Registry

Start with the project pages and use Contact to state your project of interest, indicative quantity, timing and intended use. Ask which information is available and how to obtain commercial terms from the relevant counterparty.

The private registry provides traceability. Its catalogue and contact form do not calculate prices, reserve credits or complete a sale. For sourcing options, read where to buy carbon credits; for operations involving units, see the Registry Regulations.

Frequently asked questions about prices

Is there one official price in Italy?

A universal tariff cannot tell you the cost of a voluntary credit offer. Request dated, project-specific terms. EU ETS allowance quotations concern a different instrument and are not a price list for Carbonetica credits.

Are purchase and retirement the same?

No. Purchase concerns the commercial agreement; transfer changes ownership; retirement records the units’ final use under the registry’s rules. Ask which operation is included in the offer.

Does paying more allow a carbon neutral claim?

No. The price or ownership of credits does not automatically certify a company, product or service. Any communication must be consistent with measured emissions, actions taken and available records.
